Arwad Island has the potential to be a real winner for the Syrian tourism industry, but someone needs to go round this place with a vacuum cleaner first! It looks very inviting from Tartus and from the boat, and even on entering the harbour, but away from the harbourfront, it gets quite disgusting. There are remains of the ancient city, but it is quite hard to distinguish them from the modern houses and the rubbish. Swimming is a definite no-no.

Several boats leave from the fishing harbour in Tartus. You only pay to get off the island (quite a good idea, I thought!) and it costs 20 Syrian pounds, (about 15p sterling).

Unique Suggestions: Take a clothes peg for your nose maybe?

Fun Alternatives: An alternative? Take a look at my Tartus page, where there is a lengthy travelogue about all of Syria's coast, including more pictures of Arwad.
