Jonas' Hungarian restaurant: "Mmm...Cabbage Rolls..." Jonas Restaurant Tip by csistok

It's got a real 'Hungarian' feel to it, with the requisite 'gypsy' music in the background and the Kalocsai hímzés (embroidery from the region of Kalocsa) on the walls. The servers have strong Hungarian accents, and you'll hear them speaking in their mother tongue to at least one or two patrons -- there are invariably a few Hungarian-Canadians every time we go.
Favorite Dish: This rating is a bit biased, as I'm half-Hungarian and was fed almost daily by my Hungarian grandmother. Jonas' doesn't even come close to Grandma's cookin', but when we're feeling homesick for some töltött káposzta (cabbage rolls) or bécsi szelett (wiener schnitzels) or palacsinta (crepes), it sure does hit the spot! It's great value for your money. A Small is enough to fill most people; big eaters/growing boys/pregnant women/etc. will be more than satisfied with the Large order. I recommend ordering the cucumber salad with whatever you get, as there aren't a lot of vegetables involved with Hungarian entrees (they put some canned corn/peas/carrots on the side, but it's not typical of Hungarian meals -- I think they're surprised when you eat it). If you're vegetarian, don't worry! there are a couple of meatless dishes (although make sure you inquire about it, meatless doesn't necessarily mean that lard hasn't been drizzled all over it). It's a tiny place, reservations definitely recommended on Friday and Saturday nights, unless you come later, around 8 o'clock. It gets quite busy at lunchtime on weekdays too, esp. later in the week.
