Empire State Building

Conceived in the booming 1920s but completed in the gloom of the Depression, the Empire State buildin rose at a rate of four store a week. At height of 1,250 feet ( a further 222 feet was gained in 1951 with the addition of a TV mast), the Empire State Building enjoyed the title of the world tallest building.
The building only source of income came from visitors paying to enjoy the 80-mile or so panorama attainable on a clear day from its 86th-floor observation level The building has 73 elevators, but the slower and much arduos route is by foot - 1,575 steps which is completed by the speediest competitors in 11 1/2 minutes in the annually Empire State Bulding race. Ordinary mortals take about half an hour just to walk down.
The Empire State building remained the world's tallest building until the completion of the World Trade Center in 1973
