Unique Qualities: This hotel was certainly an experience! A very expensive one I may add--but, after over a month of free lodging, my parents decided to slurge for ONE night at one of the oldest and most respected hotels in Florence. In fact, when the top-end hotel recommended in my Lonely Planet guide was full, they sent us to the Minerva. The setting cannot be beat--right in the Piazza Santa Maria Novella! It wasn't until I took Art History at university that I realised just how special that square is! Inside, it was heaven--air conditioned, feather beds, white linens, CNN, showers with actual water pressure. Best of all--'un camera con vista'--'a room with a view' that would have made E.M. Forrester proud. Shuttered doors opened out to a terrace that overlooked the Piazza and the city. To top it all off (literally), the hotel has a pool on the roof that boasts a breathtaking, sweeping view of the city.
