"Prazsky Hrad" Castle Tip by aliante1981

Castle, Prague: 261 reviews and 477 photos

A bit of history, first of all:

Last quarter of the IX C - the Hrad is founded by duke Borzhivoj

890 - the Church of St. Mary was built, few remains can now be seen

973 - the Hrad becomes the bishop's residence

1344 - the first stone of the St. Vitus Cathedral is laid

1357 - the works on Charles bridge begin

1918 - the Royal Castle becomes presidential residence

Indeed, Prazsky Hrad is called the Royal Castle in English. This one consists of three courtyards and includes one of the best known sights of the Czech capital - St. Vitus Cathedral. Guards in uniforms complete the setting, already surprising for its architectural styles' mix. And here are things you absolutely must see when taking an excursion to the Hrad:

St. Vitus Cathedral - it's so huge that it is impossible to take a photo of the whole of it from the inside of the third courtyard, where it stands. The construction began  in the 14th C and ended in the 20th C. Those medieval builders certainly took things calmly:))) Without joking... You will easily recognize it because of the twin spires and central bell tower with a dome resembling in shape an onion. Inside, pay attention to the Crown Jewels of Bohemia, stained glass and the tombs of Emperors Maximilian II and Ferdinand I.

Matthias Gate - situated in the end of the first courtyard, there are also two fighting giants in the first courtyard. I wonder who won in the end of the proceedings?;)))

The Holy Cross Chapel - you'll reach it by a passageway from the first courtyard. The church was built by Anselmo Lurago.
