This one is said to be the third by capacity of those built by the Romans (those larger are in Rome and Verona). It was surprising to see the amphitheatre towering above the shabby modern town of El Jem. In ancient times, though, the site of El Jem was a prominent city because of its location on the crossroads and because of large olive groves. That is why the amphitheatre could seat 45000 people. The size of El jem, for the record, was then of 30000 (still more than it numbers today).
