The Dolmabahce Palace was built between 1843 and 1856. The Palace was aparently an unnecessary expenditure for the Ottoman treasury, which was basically bankrupt due to external debt. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the palace remained empty for most of the next 32 years. On the formation of the Republic the Palace was used as a residence by Ataturk on his visits to Istanbul. Following Ataturk's death in November 1938 the palace was restored and was converted into a museum.
