Fondest memory: Well I wouldn't say Cherbourg is a fond memory, but it was the start of a different type of holiday. After struggling across the Channel for the best part of a week it was nice to be abroad ANYWHERE! Cherbourg has been settled since ancient times, and was frequently fought over by the French and English because of its strtegic value. The massive artificial harbours date back to Louis XVI's time, although not completed until Napoleon III in 1853, followed 5 years later by the opening of the naval dockyard. It is still a very busy naval station. Cherbourg is still besieged by the English, as they come here in great numbers, by yachts during the Summer, en route to more exotic French ports of call.
