This is the most beautiful square in Europe in my opinion. The facades of each building that surround the square are stunning and can be a bit overwhelming when upon your first visit. Therefore you will find yourself wanting to keep returning to the square. Only then will you appreciate the beauty of the highly decorative facades.
The Grand Place as you see it today, was created in the late 1690's after the armies of Louis XIV decimated the original square. The buildings were originally the headquarters for many of the local guilds. When the French destroyed the place they quickly rebuilt these buildings but more solidly. The results were awesome as each facade is decorated with ornate framing and stunning sculptures many laced with gold.
Some of the highlights of the Grand-Place include the Town Hall, which is the only building to survive the French bombardment and the Maison de Roi where the Museum of the History of the City of Brussels. On a political note, in No. 9 Karl Marx wrote the Communist Manfesto back in 1848. There is now a restaurant at this location. Many of the other buildings also house restaurants but I should remind you that they are rather expensive.
The Grand-Place hosts many festivals such as a flower exhibition. When I was there, it were holding a beer festival which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Address: Right in the heart of Brussels.
