"Fly in to O'Hare and take the..." CTA (city trains & buses, the EL) Tip by bopper

CTA (city trains & buses, the EL), Chicago: 104 reviews and 126 photos

Fly in to O'Hare and take the Blue Line downtown. Fly into Midway and take the Orange Line downtown. Don't rent a car or pay for a taxi.
Definitely plan a mid-afternoon trip on the 'El' which stands for the Elevated train. Take the Brown line north and look out the windows. Get off at the other end and get on a train back to where you started, but sit on the other side. The El is $1.50 ($1.80 with transfer). Visit http://www.transitchicago.com for info. You can take the El or the subway (aka the Red line) almost anywhere in the city. You can take the Blue line to and from the Airport. It passes through Bucktown, which is a good nightlife neighborhood.
