Musea, Antwerp: 10 reviews and 8 photos

There is a lot to do in an around Antwerp.

We have a lot of good musea.

One of the most worthwhile visiting that is typical for Antwerp is the Plantin Moretus Museum, former house of the Plantin and Moretus families.

It goes back to the 16th century (the golden age of Antwerp) when Antwerp was the world's most important printing centre.

As we were under Spanish rule, and worldwide colonization of new discovered countries/colonies began, a lot of religious books (and others) were printed in Antwerp. At a certain point we printed about 1/3 of the books in the world.

We had the time of the humanists like Erasmus, Justus Lipsius...

World maps were made...

it was such a busy business! But also dangerous as you never knew who would invade your country next and what books were on the black list or forbidden literature.

Orders where still payed in real golden or silver coins and you still can visit the old store with all it's original attributes of that time.

On special guided tours you can even print your name on a real authentic printing machine of the same era.
