"Watch out for the speeders..." Costa Rica Tourist Trap Tip by Cherie_J

Watch out for the speeders traps when traveling across the country side. My friend was behind the wheel and let me tell you...she is to the T. If the speed limit says 60km the she does 60km, unlike me...I was born to race in the Indy 500. Well, she was pulled over and the officer wanted to write her a $300 plus ticket which then would suspend her from driving in Costa Rica for 6 months. Since I speak the Spanish I am asking a 101 questions, and discussing the signs which were posted etc. (It was straight from the Dukes of Hazard, y'all.)Long story short, we went from a ticket to paying him roughly $40 cash and he'll forget everything, to not paying him at all and free to go on our merry way. The tip here is when they start laying on the scam, you deny the offer to pay them under the table and request the ticket. All of a sudden all is well, and in the future as other tourists figure this out...they will not be so apt to pull us over for a little bonus money.
