"Don't leave Berlin without a..." Museum Island Museumsinsel Tip by ucbwalker

Museum Island Museumsinsel, Berlin: 46 reviews and 76 photos

Don't leave Berlin without a visit to the Pergamon Museum, which contains all of the great antiquities heisted from the Middle East by German archaelogists. Some say these dazzling items should be returned to their countries of origin, but I would disagree. The museum funnels millions of dollars into the restoration and maintenance of this stuff, whereas it's much more likely that, were it all still in Turkey or Syria, it would be rotting slowly into nothingness, to be lost to us forever. Anyway, the centerpiece is the Pergamon Altar from Turkey, a gigantic frieze that once adorned the exterior of a massive temple. It depicts the battle between the Olympian gods and Gaia and her children; the mighty gods are quite gruesomely triumphant. This portion shows the revered goddess Athena in the center, slaying a giant (left) as Athena (upper right) crowns her victorious. Gaea (lower right) pleads for Athena to show mercy, but to no avail.
