There are places like in any city where you should be careful, use your common sense and you should have not problems........
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR PAPERS!!! It is most important you have your passport and visa on you at all times. The police can randomly pick people off the street and ask to see your papers. When you check in the hotel you must turn in your papers over to the front desk. The hotel gives you a 'hotel pass' with your information on it.
There are people here that will try and take advantage of you, making the assumption that because you are foreign you have more money than they do, thus a potential 'easy' target.
I would advise you to keep your eyes open for Gypsies in Moscow. The usual operation is that you get surrounded by a pack of children, some of whom distract you while others steal your belongings. There is also a variant in which they set upon lone foreign men and beat them up, thereafter stealing their belongings. A third variant involves being surrounded by a pack of extremely persistent women who beg from you, often stealing your belongings at the same time. These incidents occur in broad daylight, and are typically avoidable if you keep your eyes open and move quickly to cross the street, enter a store or a bus, or stand with a large group of Russians. Even travelers who haven't seen Gypsies before will recognize them right away. They look just like you'd expect Gypsies to look: ragged, filthy, and dark, with the women dressed in multi-colored and multi-layered skirts and head scarves.
