Walking, better look where you are going. As there are many hazards to avoid, never walk on a man hole cover, it may be your last step. They are not secured and are often missing.Watch for missing portions of cement in the sidewalk, protruding re-bar (metal) etc. This not such a problem in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, but in other areas it is. Another hazard is dog droppings on the sidewalks. YUK!
As for walking at night use your common sense, don't go alone, don't go into dark unlit areas, or other areas you are unfamiliar with. Avoid GYPSIES, many prey on foreigners and they work in groups, avoid eye contact with them and never stop to talk with them when approached, KEEP MOVING!!
