This is the icefall (essentially a frozen waterfall) on the Athabasca Glacier, part of the great Columbia Icefield.

If you find yourself in Alberta on the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper, you must make the time to visit the Athabasca Glacier. It is one of the few glaciers in the entire world that you can drive right up to. They not only have a tourist center (to sell you trinkets and teach you about some of the area's natural history) but you can even hire a guide and go walking ON the glacier for a little or as long as you would like; they even have huge snow 'cats' that take people out onto the glacier. I was there on July 17--the height of summer--and we had a snowstorm! Plus the sights are just wonderful.
