"Buying raw amber from miners..." Dominican Republic Off The Beaten Path Tip by brannanjoe

Dominican Republic Off The Beaten Path: 84 reviews and 92 photos

Buying raw amber from miners along Carreterra Touristica between Sosua and Santiago around Las Cumbres. Just look for a sign (usually handlettered) that says 'ambar', stop and they will bring out their collection of unpolished stones (a few polished ones). A very nice experience.

Altos de Chavon, on South Coast about one hour past San Pedro de Macoris. Recreated Italian Rennaissance village built by wealthy Dominicans and latins (Including Oscar de La Renta). Excellent views of Rio Chavon valley, good pizza, nice museum and shopping.
