Volcán Arenal (1'633 metres) was dormant until 1968 when huge explosions
started lava flows and is active until today so I definitely wasn't going to
miss spending a few days in Fortuna, the nearest village, to witness this
phenomenon. Nighttime views are apparently spectacular when one can see the
red-hot lava glowing in the dark. However, Saint Peter obviously was too
busy to bless us with good weather. It rained most of the 3 days, the
volcano hidden behind thick cloud cover which didn't even loosen up slightly
during the night - a great disappointment because I truly thought that I
would at last get to see an active volcano - sigh!!!
