Favorite thing: One word: sauna. Go visit one and get hooked on it. The sauna was invented about two thousand years ago. Rumor says that two drunk guys were arguing about who can withstand more heat. That's when they got out, built the first sauna and heated it up until it caught fire and burned down. This is why there was a tie at the first Sauna Bathing World Championships. The tradition still goes on every year.
What is this sauna then? It's a room which is heated with a chimney or an electrical heater. Temperatures range between 80 to 100 celcius, sometimes even higher than that. The temperature (actually moisture) is controlled by throwing water on the hot rocks in the chimney. This is a common dick measuring game between men. The more moisture the air is, the hotter it feels.
People are totally naked in Finnish saunas. This involves the public saunas too. It may feel strange but it's the most natural thing ever for any Finn. Wearing a swimming suit there would feel very strange. The sauna is really a magical room. Nowhere else could men get away with being naked together. It sounds natural to go and have a sauna-evening among guys. But somehow a shower-evening sounds too much like Village People <img src=/p/i_o.gif>
There are about 1.5 million saunas in Finland. Compare that to 5 million people and you'll get a picture of how central it is in Finnish culture.
