It must be noted that the Rhineland is a tourist area, but this is not to detract from the efforts made by the locals to provide, a near perfect transport infrastructure, some superb eating/drinking facilities and as much information that the serious traveller could want.
The tours arranged for visitors to the Rhineland are fairly stock, up and down the valley! but down the valley are some real gems.
Rudesheim is a must! the Drosselgasse and Niederwald Denkmal visits (you'll hear of them) are brilliant. The Drosselgasse is a narrow street of bars and entertainment; and the Niederwald Denkmal is a super statue tribute to Germany, accessible on foot or a cable car ride up the hill. I did a brandy distillery trip also but I don't remember much about that!!!
This photo shows me, and Stan from Yorkshire, in the Drosselgasse. We thought that these were pint glasses, but when they carried us out, not long after, we discovered that they were 2ltr ones!!!
