Favorite thing: Onsen is the Japanese name for Hot Springs. There are many great onsen all over Japan. Onsen come in many shapes, sizes and styles. This onsen is in Nagano near the Jigokudani Monkey Park. It is a unisex onsen although in this pic there are just men... naked men that is! Taking an onsen in Japan is a real cultural experience not to be missed!

Never been to an onsen? This is what you do:
First you go into the changing area and take off all your clothes (no room for modesty in an onsen although it is possible to use a small towel as these men have). Then it's off to the washing area. You must shampoo and wash yourself entirely whilst sitting on a little stool BEFORE you get into the onsen pools. Traditional onsen are just beautiful, usually with a rotenburo or outdoor pool. Then you get in and relax in the hot mineral water and wash all those aches away! Some onsen will have sauna aswell. Often after being in the hot water I like to take a cold shower and then get back in again!!
