"RAVENNA. The mausoleum of..." Italy Favorite Tip by lengyelp

Italy General: 753 reviews and 735 photos

Favorite thing: RAVENNA. The mausoleum of Theodoric with its roof made of one single block of stone. And mosaics, mosaics, mosaics everywhere (even on dustbins). From the outside the buildings (S. Vitale, Galla Placidia, etc.) show nothing special. Just ordinary brick constructions, such as you can see everywhere in Italy. But inside... you cannot be prepared. Probably you had seen photos of the mosaics, but when you enter, you are lost. Gold and blue everywhere, quiet music... you don't know if you are still on Earth. You see the faces of long-dead people, you even see their expression. These are not just little pieces of stone put together, it is something much, much more.
Oh yes, and if you are here, see the tomb of Dante.
