  The Western Wall
by Goner

Of course everyone must visit Jerusalem, it is the capital of the State of Israel and the ancient capital of the Biblical Judea. It is a religious and spiritual center for Jews, Christians, and Moslems. Jerusalem lies in the Judean hills. It contains the Old City, surrounded by high fortified walls and ramparts, and the new city, modern Jerusalem.

The old city is divided into four quarters; Christian, Moslem, Armenian and the Jewish. When I visited there, everyone seemed to be busy selling their wares and living their lives. There were Israeli guards standing on the Via Dolorosa and I saw one school teacher herding a small group of school children with her hand on uzi which was held in a holster across her chest. This reminded me that there has been trouble there and of course there is again. There are eight gates to the city, each seems to be significant to the different cultures and religions.

There so many significant religious sites; the Western or Wailing Wall, the Temple Mount with the Dome of the Rock, the Holy Sepulchre and the stations on the Via Dolorsa and many famous churches and monasteries.
The new city is the site of the Knesset, Israel's parliment, several museums and the Hebrew university. The Hadassah Hospital contains the famed Chagall Windows.

Directions: Jerusalem is about 30 miles from the Ben Gurion airport.
