Jaffa, the town of legends. Yafo (the beautiful one) for the Hebrews, Joppeh for the Greeks, Joppa for the Romans, Yafa for the Arabs, Yopheh for the Crusaders, Jaffa was according to legend, created by Japhet, the son of Noah. According to the Bible this is where Noah embarked on his journey. Jaffa has been under the rule of Egyptians, Philistines, Phoenicians and Persians. In 322 B.C. the city fell into the hands of Alexander the Great and when it was occupied by the Romans, Mark Anthony gave it to Cleopatra. It was also ruled by the Turks, and the Mamluckes and was conquered by Napoleon. In 1960 the Israeli government restored the old town and now has become quite an artist colonly. The streets are steep and I huffed and puffed to climb to the top, not knowing there was an easier route to take. The view of the Mediterranean from the top is breathtaking. I only had a few hours before my plane left for the U.S. and chose to see Jaffa as opposed to Tel Aviv. I'm glad I did. They have done a great job of restoring Jaffa. It's a wonderful place to wander, with it's craftsmen's quarters, boutiques, and restaurants.
