"Go off the Beaten Path to this..." Alaska Favorite Tip by worldtrekker

Favorite thing: Go off the Beaten Path to this spectacular, undeveloped wilderness area: Wrangell St. Elias National Park! Chitina is just outside the park boundary. From here you begin a long, 3 hour, 60 mile drive along the narrow, unpaved McCarthy Road to the town of McCarthy which lies in the center of this, the nation's largest national park. This vast unspoilt wilderness offers backpacking, mountaineering, river running, glacier hiking, and ice climbing. For more, see my Chitina page.
