The lovely and historical city of York! (2000 trip)
Left--my friend Lynn at the Whip ma whop ma Gate. We loved the name of this Gate, we had to get it on film!
This city got its start in pre-Roman times, and was pretty prominent for most of its history. Nowadays, it is more a cultural and touristy kind of city, but that does not stop it from having charm. The city walls still exist, and it makes the inner city very pedestrian friendly. Plus there is great shopping all over! The museums (Castle museum, especially) do teach the visitor an awful lot about York's life, but also incorporates British life, in general, too. The Minster is beautiful, and can rival all the cathedrals of France in size and detail. The pubs are excellent and the food hearty and filling. And plus--the people are exceedingly friendly, although certain bookshop owners are a little 'different.' (The story behind this last statement will be told a little later!)
