On Santorini, Akrotiri is an astonishing Minoan site that predates the ancient Greek civilization. The site was only discovered in 1967 and best seen with a guide since the site to the untrained eye isn't exactly spectacular. Although researchers uncovered storage jars and other items, they found no skeletons or personal items of value. This leads people to believe that the Minoans had enough warning to leave before a vulcanic eruption destroyed their city.
Scientists believe that there are three levels. The first dates to about 5,000 BC and the second to about 15,000 BC. They haven't reached the third level yet.
