Wai-O-Tapu, Rotorua: 32 reviews and 82 photos

Waiotapu is Maori for 'sacred waters'. It is a geothermal sightseeing attraction just outside of Rotorua. The area is known as New Zealand's most colourful and diverse geothermal sightseeing experience.

Champagne pools, a series of enormous hot pools that are a rich mixture of gold, yellow and orange. The colors are caused by mineral salts in the water. The pools occupy a crater that formed as a result of a volcanic explosion 900 years ago.

Address: This area is about 30 minutes south of Rotorua.
Directions: 27kms Sth of Rotorua/Taupo Hwy.
