"There are excellent air and..." Train to & from Schiphol Airport Tip by GerryM

There are excellent air and rail services connecting through this city. If you arrive by air, then I would advise getting into the centre using the train. It is relatively cheap at Dfl 6.50pp and trains run from within the airport building every 10 minutes to Amsterdam Central Station. The journey time is approximately 20 minutes. There are of course also taxi's but as a frequent user of this airport myself I prefer the train as in terms of time, it is the most efficient, especially during busy periods. the average cost for a taxi is approximately Dfl 65.00, therefore ten times more than the train.
As the city is actually relatively small, once you have adjusted to the fact, that it is layed out in a half moon shape. As opposed to the oblong blocks many of us may be more familiar with, it is (weather permitting) quite nice to walk around. There is also a very good tram system, but for that you may need to do a bit more planning to understand which tram for which part of the city.
There are boat tours through the canals, train or bus excursions to other parts of the country. If you are here in good summer weather, there are a great many very nice beaches within easy travelling from the city centre.
For the more adventurous their are also bicycle tours or indeed you may rent a bicycle and plan your own tour. The whole place is flat so it need not be too arduous, go on, give it a go.
