"WARTIME TUNNELS" Dover Things to Do Tip by hayward68

Dover Things to Do: 154 reviews and 222 photos

These were secret wartime tunnels from which Vice Admiral Ramsay and Sir Winston Churchill planned and executed the evacuation of Dunkirk in 'Operation Dynamo.' They worked round the clock for 9 days to make the evacuation a success. It was estimated that only 45,000 soldiers could be brought back, but 388, 000 troops were ferried on ships from the beaches of Dunkirk back to the shores of Kent.

You take a tour deep underground Dover Castle, even at one point going into tunnels built during the Napoleonic era. It was a fascinating tour, but they wouldn't let us take pics, so here's a postcard to show what it looks like inside.
