<p><b><font color=magneta size=+1>Hohensalzburg Castle:</b></font> (Photo by: Anderea Reichel) Built in 11th century (beginning in 1077) for Archbishop Gebhard , Festung is a large medieval frtress. You can either use the funicular or walk up the stairs to reach the castle.
The cable railway there has been running since 1892, and was replaced with an electric one in 1960s.
The castle is considered to be the landmark of the city and state of Salzburg and is one of the largest and best preserved european fortresses of the middle ages.
