This massive temple was constructed over a period of 1500 years. One of the most interesting ways to view this site is to see the Sound and Light Show. There are various times to go depending on which language you want to hear it in.
The area which Karnak occupies is quite vast so if you're not there for the Sound and Light Show, give yourself plenty of time to wander around. You start out your tour by walking through the start of the Avenue of Spinxes, later seen also at Luxor Temple.
The main temples, of which there are three, are of Amun, Mut and Menthu are are within the walls. Outside the walls you can view the Sacred Lake and an Open Air Museum. I know it being called and Open Air Museum sounds strange, as basically it's all open air, but that's what it's called ;-) There are also two other temples, the Temple of Khonsu and the Temple of Opet.
What's really interesting about Karnak is that everybody who was ruling at different times put their own mark on the temple. For example, the Hypostyle Hall was started by Seti I and completed by Ramses II. There's the obelisk of Queen Hapshetsut, a pylon by Tuhtmosis VI, and a sanctuary built by Philip Arrhidaeus, who was brother to Alexander the Great.
So many people put their mark on this site and they cover huge amount of time in history.
