This not a danger, just some advice. If you want to visit the HYPOGEUM, sign up as soon as you arrive in Malta. The hypogeum is an underground burial place and temple that was discovered in the early 1900's when some men were laying the foundation for a house. It is guessed that it was built around 3000 BC and it is estimated that around 7000 bodies may have been buried here.
Only a limited amount of people at a time can visit here and you must make reservations in advance. The reason for this is a very valid one. Carbon Dioxide exhaled from hoards of tourists began to damage the limestone walls of the burial chamber and at one time the Hypogeum was closed to the public because of this.
I really wanted to see this place and I went on a Monday hoping to be able to get in by Friday. Unfortunately,it was booked up through Sunday and I was leaving that day.It was not a total loss though, because some of the artifacts found in the Hypogeum (such as 'The Sleeping Lady') are on display at The National Museum of Archeology in Valletta.
