Favorite thing: THE CAMELS I loved them! The dromedary ( one humped) is native to North Africa. They really are a very sturdy animal and they have the prettiest long eyelashes! The camels are not only used for transportation, but in Southern Tunisia, they are sometimes used as food! :-(

Fondest memory: I think the greatest highlight of my trip to Tunisia was the camel ride in the Sahara. Such an amazing experience! We left at 7:00 pm and rode until we watched the sunset over the desert. The desert was a very short walk from the hotel. First of all, they gave us the traditional desert garb to wear if we wanted to, a long robe and head covering. Of course I had to wear it( even if I did look silly, it was all part of the experience!)The camel was sitting down and you sit on the saddle which was placed on the back on the hump. Be sure to hold on tightly when the camel stands up! First you go waaaaaaay forward and then way back ,and when the camel is fully standing you are way up high! It felt much higher than I thought it would be! Then we made a little caravan and rode amongst the sand dunes, which were so perfectly shaped by the wind. After awhile ,we stopped and got off the camels. The guys who took us were really nice and a lot of fun. They slid us down the sand dunes and taught us Arab songs, and one of them gave me a small sandrose he had found. They spoke very little English, but were quite fluent in Italian and French, so using bits and pieces of all 3 languages, it really was not that hard to communicate. After a little while we hopped back on the camels and rode back seeing the gorgeous sunset over the Sahara on the way.
