Luggage and bags: Pack light. No reason to carry every stitch of clothing you ever owned.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: It depends on whether you visit Rio or Petrópolis. Temperatures are warm by American standards (in most places) the year round downtown. However, Petrópolis is so high up, it has four distinctive seasons. It can get cool at night up there even in summer.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Bring plenty of sun block. That sun beats down right hard, paricularly in summer. I would also bring allergy medication in case the tropical flowers set off your allergies.

Photo Equipment: I used a 35 mm. Kodak Advantix. It takes pictures of all different sizes including panorama. The Kodak Advantix is compact and the film is easy to change.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Bring sun block, mosquito repellent, and flip-flops. That sand can get hot.
