The city of Petrópolis, 40 miles (66 km.) north of the city of Rio de Janeiro. During the time (pre-1960) when Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil, Petrópolis was the summertime capital. Rich folks from Rio would go up there 2500 ft. (800 m.) above sea level to escape Rio's steamy summer heat. When in Petrópolis, be sure to visit the Imperial Museum (home of Dom Pedro I). It costs 5 reais ±$2 (U.S.) and you have to wear special slippers to walk around in there.
