"The roads in Saigon and Hanoi..." Vietnam Local Custom Tip by Traveladdikt

Vietnam Local Customs: 196 reviews and 202 photos

The roads in Saigon and Hanoi are teeming with bicycles and motorbikes most of which carry more than one passenger. These two wheeled vehicles don't usually stop for traffic lights and often ride the wrong way along the road.

Crossing the road can appear impossible at first glance as the traffic never seems to stop but take a look at what the locals do for a few moments - they just walk out in front of approaching traffic completely oblivious to it all. The two-wheeled vehicles just swerve around pedestrians. It is important to be confident about this and keep up a steady pace so that they can predict where you are going to be.

Please note however, that you should still watch out for the occasional four-wheeled vehicle as you will definitely need to give way to them!
