There seems to be this misconception, particularly by those in third world countries, that Americans are all rich. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, there is grinding poverty in some inner-city neighbourhoods and in economically depressed rural areas such as Appalachia (eastern Kentucky, southwestern Virginia) or the Mississippi Delta. Most Americans, myself included, can be classified in the middle class.
