Metro, Saint Petersburg: 84 reviews and 92 photos

St. Petersburg is one of the most accessible cities in Russia. You can fly there from elsewhere in Russia, or from Europe. If you're coming from Moscow, the best way is to take the overnight train. This takes between six and eight hours and is a definite must-do experience. There is a daytime train as well, but the views along the way aren't much to look at, so you may as well use the time for sleeping and have more days to spend in St. Petersburg!
St. Petersburg has a metro system similar to Moscow's in style and utility. One interesting feature is that its trains run VERY far underground, because of the canals. The escalators are a little terrifying--very fast, very long, and if you don't keep your eyes on your shoes you can get a real case of vertigo! Above ground, there are the canals, but these are not really used for public transportation. The Venice of the North it may be, but there are no gondolas in St. Petersburg. Take a taxi instead.
