I've traveled into Prague by air (from Moscow and from Warsaw on Czech Air, a fine airline) and left the city by rail, en route to Florence. I did my train journey in 1994, and at that time, buying a rail ticket was one of the few experiences that was still authentically Communist. I hope it's better now--but in '94 I had to marshal all the strategies I'd gained over the years of living and traveling in Russia in order to cajole a ticket to Florence from a very unhelpful and unfriendly agent. Once I actually got on the train, everything was great and I had a fun time being the amateur interpreter between the conductor and the other people in my compartment. My Russian and bad French seemed to be a workable combination to communicate with a Czech conductor!
