Russian orthodox churches are a wonder to behold. Even after 70 years of official neglect and a great deal of wilful destruction, the churches all over Russia can still take your breath away. If you pass one by--in Moscow, or anywhere--go in and take a look around. You'll be amazed by the fantastic display of icons, gold fittings, and frescoes in many churches that look modest from the outside. If there is a service going on, there will usually be a choir (hidden behind a screen, as is the priest), and the singing is absolutely beautiful. There are no pews in Russian Orthodox churches, so be prepared to stand and gawk for a while. The church in this photo is in Uglich. You can see dozens of spectacular examples of churches and iconography around the 'Golden Ring' cities that spread to the northeast of Moscow, including places like Vladimir, Yaroslavl, and Sergeyev Posad.
