Akita Local Customs: 4 reviews and 4 photos
KABAZAIKU (CHERRY BARK CRAFTS): A specialty of Kakunodate, it is designated as a traditional craft of Japan. Products such as tea containers & boxes are made by applying the bark of mountain cherry trees in layers. The glossiness increases as it is being used.
Kabazaiku has a long history. It originated in 1780s in North Akita & was made famous by Kakunodate samurai Fujimura Hikoroku who learned the craft & taught it to other local samurais.
