Favorite thing:
You already have seen that San Gimignano is a very old town, but how old is it exactly? It all started off with being a small Etruscan village around 200-300 BC. In the 10th century San Gimignano started its life as a town. San Gimignano got its name at that time. It was named after the Holy Bishop of Modena, St. Gimignano, who is said to have saved the village from the barbarian hordes. The town was located at the “Via Francigena”, a trading and pilgrim’s route. This made it possible for San Gimignano to increase in wealth and developed greatly during the Middle Ages. In 1348 San Gimignano's was struck by the Plague, which resulted in a drastic reduction of its population. From there on it went downwards with San Gimignano, loosing its importance. But now San Gimignano is restored and it gives a unique opportunity to have a look into its past. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this little town and I am really happy that it is still here.
