"The village of St Denis" Basilique Cathédrale de Saint-Denis Tip by oneonta_ni

  Stained glass from the crypt
by oneonta_ni

The village of St Denis is just north of Paris.
This is a nice area for a wander and to see something different from the hoards of tourists in the main areas of Paris. The main thing to see, however is the Basilique de Saint Denis. This is where the royals of France are buried and it is a beautiful building to see. There is some beautiful stained glass - especially in the crypt.

The basilica was built over a Gallo-Roman cemetary in which St Denis was buried. He was martyred in 250AD. The remains of this cemetary are still visible in the basilica.

Address: 1 Rue de la Légion d'Honneur, 93200 Saint-Denis,
Directions: Just north of Paris, easily accessible by Metro. Take the Metro to St Denis Basilique - be sure to get a train going that direction (the line branches off).
