Trains, trains and MORE trains. I learned the hard way that if you are traveling alot between cities, you should get a Japan rail pass BEFORE you leave for Japan. You cannot get it in Japan and it will save you alot of money. If, however, you are only going to be visiting one or two cities, then you will not need a rail pass. If you DON'T get a rail pass, in the right season you can try to get a 'seishun Juu-hachi kippu'. This means 'seishun 18 ticket'. For essentially $100 you get 5 one-day passes for local trains (not for express or bullet trains). For more information, go to my regular Japan Travel Page:
