This mighty fortress, royal palace and prison is steeped in history and blood. It no longer the stronghold of the Crown Jewels, but contains many interesting artifacts. The White Tower was erected by the Bishop of Rochester in 1078 for William the Conquerer in order to protect and overawe the City. Other notable features include the Bloody Tower, Traitors Gate, the Jewel House, and the Beefeaters, in their traditional uniform.
