"ROBBEN ISLAND" South Africa Things to Do Tip by donovanel

South Africa Things to Do: 727 reviews and 1,118 photos

The recorded history of the island goes back ssome 400 years ago. The island has been used as a pantry for the sea-faring, as a fishing base, a whaling station, a hospital, a mental asylum, and military base. Its reputation as a place of banishment is the best-known aspect of its history--the prison closed at the end of 1996. The banished have included most recently the opponents of the apartheid regime and is probably most famous as former South African President Nelson Mandela's imprisonment.

Directions: You can catch a ferry to the island from the harbor area in Cape Town.
othercontact: The ferries run hourly, from 8am
