< Japan TV Programme >

The name of this bizarre program is virtually untranslatable. It is often rendered as 'Don't go for it electric wave boy', but that doesn't make much sense, does it? Shonen means young boy, and denpa refers to the airwaves. Susunu means 'not advancing'. Anyway, the basis concept of the program is that aspiring comedians try to perform seemingly impossible challenges. Denpa Shonen is said to have inspired popular programs like Survivor in America.
Denpa Shonen is most famous for making the comedy duo Saruganseki hitchhike from Hong Kong to London with only $1000. They were put on an airplane and flown to Hong Kong without being told what was happening and then set on their way. It took them 180 days, and the two endured enormous hardships.
Although the challenges on this program can be cruel, viewers really begins to empathise with the people struggling against incredible odds, and really start to root for them.
Denpa Shonen airs on Sunday nights at 10:30 on NTV. < Chennel 4 >
