"Poutine is the national food..." Canada Local Custom Tip by TouristCraig

Canada Local Customs: 138 reviews and 102 photos

Poutine is the national food dish. It is french fries topped with cheese curds and hot brown gravy. It tastes very good but is not as good for those with high cloresterol and is more popular in Quebec. This wonderful mélange of taste-tempting but calorie-rich treats originated in Québec, in the region of the Bas-St-Laurent or Gaspésie (so I've been told), caught on in Montréal, and quickly spread from there to other parts of Québec, and even as far as Ottawa. Since then, it has spread across Canada, and is even available at fast-food chains such as Burger King. Only certain type of cheese can be used and any variation on this makes a big difference. Please what ever you do, please take the time to learn the proper pronounciation of this word. If you say it wrong in Quebec you will be laughed at or slapped.
