Torre de Belém - Tower of Belém, Lisbon: 224 reviews and 444 photos

Belem is the part of 'ancient' Lisbon closest to the sea. This closeness is not only physicly (it's the most western part of Lisbon) but also here are stil many waterfront activities. There are two waterfront sites that rivaled in my mind which I should use for an opening picture for this quarter. The 'winner' is the enormous Monument of Discoveries. This was built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th aniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator, the Portugese king that sponsored and supported the discovery-travels of many famous travelers like Vasco da Gama, Pedro Alvares Cabral and Fernao Magelhaes. For more pictures and information on this monument and the Belem quarter look at the travalogue 'Belem' which can be reached by clicking this link.
